Let’s Design My Website
As Social Media outlets continue to grow, more and more businesses are getting into the act. This is a great thing. It’s truly a necessary part of your online marketing strategy. You can gain website traffic and thus new customers from your Social Media efforts.
BUT…
It’s important to remember that you should set up a Facebook PAGE for your business, not a profile. Profiles are for individuals. Individuals can be friends with people, businesses cannot – per Facebook’s Terms of Use:
Facebook profiles are meant to represent a single individual
Organizations of any type are not permitted to maintain an account under the name of their organization. We have created Facebook Pages to allow organizations to have a presence on Facebook. These Pages are distinct presences, separate from user profiles, and optimized for an organization’s needs to communicate, distribute information/content, engage their fans, and capture new audiences virally through their fan’s recommendations to their friends. Facebook Pages are designed to be a media rich, valuable presence for any artist, business or brand.
If you create a profile for your business, your account may be disabled for violating our Terms of Use. If you have questions about how to best leverage your Facebook Page, please check out Facebook’s Q & A.
All personal site features, such as friending and messaging, are also for personal use only and may not be used for professional promotion. If you add a user as a friend, for example, this person will be invited to be a friend of your profile and not your Page. Using personal site features for professional promotion, or creating unauthorized Pages, may result in your account being warned or disabled.
You wouldn’t want a profile anyway!
With a Facebook page, your business will have Fans instead of Friends, and there’s no limit to the number (profiles have a 5,000 friend limit). A Facebook Page allows you so much more in terms of promoting your business! Pages offer many things that a profile does: photos, videos, and wall posts (status updates); but they also offer so much more! You can use your page’s discussion boards to start conversations about specific topics. Interaction with your fans increases your visibility, and you can choose your audience. Be sure to link to your website and/or blog frequently.
Facebook pages provide you with tools to gauge your traffic and fan participation, as well as to start using Facebook ads (which by the way, I’ve found to be a very good return on investment).
Already have a profile for your business?
Not a problem…but, you should convert it as soon as possible, to avoid losing not only your photos, but your “friends” as well. When you use Facebook’s Conversion Tool, your confirmed friends automatically become fans. Your profile photo will transfer over, but you’ll want to make sure that you save any important photos and status updates from your profile…those WILL NOT TRANSFER. You will want to re-post them when the conversion is complete.
Don’t Forget you will need to have a personal profile set up in your name, in order to be the Administrator of the page. If your business profile was under your name, the conversion tool will address that issue for you.
Social Media is important for your business…make sure you’re following the rules, and using the correct tools!

I just started working for a company & they had someone start a business page. Now I am trying to come in & update everything & figure out the process. This has helped me a lot, but what I am wondering, is how do you like other businesses from your business page or can you? Thank you in advance.
Also, since someone made up the page & I am coming in to ADMIN it… is there something that I need to do differently? I just log into the company’s business page & add things from there.
If you are logged in as the page, you can “like” another page that way. The way to tell who you are logged in as, is to look at the top of the page (in the light blue bar)…for example, mine says: “You are posting, commenting, and liking as Nola Cooper Designs — Change to Nola Manus Cooper”. The “Change to…” part is a link. Keep in mind that likes for other pages do not count if you like them as your page, doing that will only make them show up in the likes section of YOUR Facebook page. If you want to like another page, and make it count for them, you should like them from your personal account.
Have there been any things you’d like to do on the page, that you were not able to do? Typically, and admin can do everything on a page…but if there’s something you’ve seen that you’re interested in, it could be an app that you need to add to the page. I look forward to hearing your reply!
The solution I got from another post: you need to change the security setting of the person that you want to add as admin. Their email has to be found-able by “EVERYONE” before you add that person to admin role. The setting can be changed back to friends only after the admin role is assigned.
I tried, it worked.Hope it help you a little bit.
The post I found this:
https://www.facebook.com/business/help/community/question/?id=1682657242023611
The problem is this… when I started working here someone had made a business page for this company. All I was given was an email address for the page & a password. I can add things, but I can’t search anyone or business to even like their page. I can’t do anything outside add pics & update status. I can edit the page but I can’t like anything and there is no adjoining accounts.
It sounds like your personal account is not connected to the business page in any way. First you need to “like” the page from your personal account. Then, you should be able to log in to the business page and go to “Manage Admin Roles”. There you can add page managers…add yourself as a page manager. This will allow you to switch back and forth between the accounts easily.
I am leaving for the day. I will try to come back here in the morning for your response. thank you again
I am not the director here I am just the office assistant & we use all the director’s info to log into the FB. However, she does not have a personal FB. I do however, but I don’t think they want my personal account attached to the business page. Is there a way around this?
Only the way that you are currently doing it.
But we cannot like another page or business page from our page.
Ok I’m back hehe!
My director made a page & we have both liked our business page. Now it will not let us add ourselves to Admin Roles… do you know what the problem could be?
I do have a business page and just learned that I can not have friends but fans on my page. How do I invite people to be fans instead of friends.
Thank you.
If it’s a business page, they can only be fans…it’s not possible to be friends with a business page.
Go to your page, and click the 3 dots next to the Share button. In the drop down, select “Invite Friends”.
Hello,
I am trying to post some pictures and trying to “tag” other business/employees who are working on the project w. us. But I can not. Isn’t this something I should be able to do?
thanks
Yes, you should. I have found that sometimes I have to put @ in front of the name to get it to tag correctly, especially on my smartphone.
HI Nola,
i have still not got the answer to – How do i Invite Friends to my business page ? How ? i have a personal account, i have liked the business page and also the page admin. But from where and how do i invite my targeted audience to the business page ?
Thanks.
The “More” button on the business page is a dropdown and in that dropdown you will find “Invite Friends”.
Why do I have 649 friends on my personal page and 151 on my business? I have been doing everything from the business page, so I don’t understand. How do I get the 649 friends to come over to the business page? My “invite friends” section is empty of potential invitees.
Thanks
Do you mean that you have 151 LIKES on your business page? If you have friends for your business, then you need to read this article again.
Your personal page and business page are two completely different entities. Your personal friends are not automatically tied to your business page, they have to “Like” it separately. You can invite your friends to like your business page, but it’s their decision whether to do so.
Ahhh. Thanks!
Since I was doing all the inviting from the business page, I thought all the friends would go to the business page. Got it, now!
I have exhausted my “invite Friend” button. No one else is in there. I’m guessing I’ll need to message or post to convert all the hundreds of personal page people to follow.
Appreciated!
Friends don’t automatically convert to a business page. Also, your friends can choose not to like a page, even if you invite them. If they have ignored your invitation, I don’t believe you can invite them again.
Sending personal private messages may be the way to go. Even with that, they have the choice whether to like your page, or not.
Good luck!
FB was a college project for fun. When they got to the real world they had to find a way to actually monetize their product so they had to add business functions. All the business stuff is an afterthought and retro-fit. So that’s the real reason using FB business functionality is so bizarre, clunky and illogical!
I personally do not find Facebook for business clunky and illogical. It’s not meant to be the same as it is for personal accounts, it’s meant to be a vehicle for (1) connecting with your audience and providing an avenue for getting your news and posts out to that audience; and (2) advertising to certain demographics.
Used properly, Facebook can be a very valuable part of your marketing efforts.
I’m REALLY confused about Facebook and using it for a business. I’m pretty tech savy but trying to figure out anything about how to use Facebook for business is virtually impossible. If I can’t use my Profile to tell my friends about my business then how do you tell anyone about your business? A Page can’t have friends only fan’s or Likes. So, again, how do I use my Page to communicate with people I know or groups that would be interested in my business? Forget asking Facebook, it took me nearly a month to get them to change the name of my Page to the actual name of my business. It’s too long to explain here.
Terry, you can use your personal profile to link to your business page. You can share your business posts on your personal profile, as well. To invite your friends to like your page, go to your page and click on the three dots next to the Share button (underneath your cover image), in the drop down, select “Invite Friends”. You can also share your business posts in any groups that you are a member of… AS LONG AS THE GROUP’S RULES ALLOW IT. Facebook has many tools to help you with your business page, including Insights and Publishing Tools. Insights can help you discover your audience habits, so you know when to post, and Publishing Tools allow you to schedule your posts for the perfect times that will reach your audience.
Hello!
I have a problem with my Facebook page.
I’m as admin in two artist profile pages which I own, but the other on lost its function to invite my friends to like my page…
I’ve tried to troubleshoot the differences between these two Facebook pages but so far the only difference is that the other page is linked with my Instagram page. That is the one in which Invite friends-option was lost a short while ago. I am troubled with this and would like to do anything to recover the invitation function.
Do you have any solution or advice in mind?
Thank You!
I know that there are limits to invitations, and to number of fans, so it could be one of those.
First of all, thank You for all your help.
My question is, the only I created my personal page is to create a business page. I rather not use my personal one at all,to be honest. The only way see to engage other is spending money. When you try to invite just by typing in name. It doesn’t work for me.
You can only send actual invites from a personal account because that’s where your “friends” reside…in the database of your personal account.
I have found success in inviting people who like posts on my page. When you get notifications for “likes” on a post from your page, there is an option (button) next to anyone that’s not already a “fan” to invite them to like your page.
Lastly, you can also “Promote your page” by clicking the “Promote” button. These are all paid options, but you can set very low budgets, and by defining your audience get a nice ROI.
Hope this helps!
